Salins-les-Bains
Salt extraction in Salins-les-Bains was mentioned for the first time back in the 12th century. Salins-les-Bains used to be of gold, because if you had salt you automatically had gold in your hands. The fortresses surrounding the city remove all doubt. 20 kilometres further up, Claude Nicholas Ledoux designed a new salt factory in 1774. The new Saltworks in Arc-et-Senans was an expansion of the saltworks in Salins-les-Bains. In 1962 the saltworks in Salins-les-Bains closed its doors and was later sold to the municipality. Nowadays it is a museum.

Olavsgruva copper mine, Røros
The Olavsgruva copper mine is 12 km east of Røros. Here the copper ore was extracted and transported to the smelters in Røros. This was one of the last mines to be exploited in roros. Now it is a mine museum where time has literally stood still. Many of the old machines still work perfectly, so who knows All around you is the atmosphere of copper and the dull sweat of stalactite caves. There was a lot of hard work in the bowels of mother earth, you were paid per kilo of ore. "Don't whine, just dig", was the motto. If you had a god day then the outside world noticed.

Norway wood transport system
Røros copperworks has left its mark in the area in and around Femundsmarka national park. "If you've got the wood, then you've got the ore". The works on the western shore of Femunden were in operation from 1743 to 1822. Through a smart system of canals the lakes were connected with each other to make the wood transport easier. The digging of the canals took 50 years. The distance that the wood had to cover to the mine kept increasing. The consumption in the mine and in the smelters was so great, that whole forests disappeared into thin air. Nevertheless, the lumberjacks were better off than their colleagues under ground.
