City of Bath, Engeland

Water and fire have always played an important role in the English city of Bath. Water to an important extent determined the city’s future. Logical because Bath is the only place in England that has a hot-water spring at a temperature of over 45 degrees Celsius. You can go a long way with a spring and a bit of vision. The Romans managed it and built the “Aquae Sulis” settlement around the spring, currently known as Bath, on the river Avon.

John Woods second prestigious project was the construction of The Circus, originally named Kings Circus. This is John Woods masterwork in Bath. Building commenced in 1754. Unfortunately he died that same year and never saw the wonderful building completed.

Bath Canals
Bath is beautifully situated in the Avon valley, but whats the reason of the canal and sluices on the hills around the city? In 1720, Ralph Allen - former worker for the Post Office - had a concession on a sandstone mine and wanted to sell his stones. So what do you do? That is right, make friends with the right people and find financiers, and architects to build homes. There was plenty of stone to build. Allen ordered the architect John Wood to devise plans for building chic projects. The Georgian style was introduced in Bath. To get the stones to their intended location required roads, or preferably waterways. Allen ordered a canal to be built, because he was an expert at solving problems. He had made his fortune by solving organisational problems for the British Post Office.

Bath is beautifully situated in the Avon valley, The old centre around the Abbey and the Roman baths Sally Lunn was baker by profession, her small home is the oldest in the city. If she had known that her buns would have been so successful, she probably would have built a bigger home. A tiny house with a tiny museum but with big buns. The dishes are prepared according to age-old English recipes and this will continue unchanged for the time being. Just like all those other nostalgic spots.
